Piedmont Triad experiencing one of the coldest Januarys on record
Jan 15, 2025
(WGHP) -- If you’ve stepped outside this month, you’ve noticed how cold it’s been. And no, it’s not just you if we look at the numbers it’s been abnormally cold to start off the year.
We may only be halfway through the month, but as of January 14, we’re sitting at the 4th coldest January on record. This will very likely change since there’s still another two weeks left in the month but that leads us to looking into why we’re even in one of the top five spots.
Slim chance for more winter weather in Triad next week
If we look at just the first two weeks of January, this is the coldest start to the month since 2018.
How do we know this? Well, if we average the average temperatures for each day this month, through January 14, it comes out to 32.6 degrees. In 2018, the mean average temperature for January 1 through January 14 was 31.4 degrees.
Not only has the average of our January temperatures been the coldest it’s been in seven years but, our average of afternoon temperatures for the first two weeks in January is the coldest it’s been in 43 years.
In the first two weeks of the month, our average high temperature is 52 degrees. The last time we had an average high temperature colder in the first two weeks of January was in 1981 with an average high of 49 degrees.
Our morning temperatures have also been freezing, literally. For the last 2 weeks, our morning temperatures have been below freezing which is the longest stretch of freezing mornings in nearly three years.
PTI Airport has observed a morning low of 32 degrees or colder from January 2 through January 15, marking 14 consecutive mornings of below freezing temperatures.
The last time we saw a longer stretch of morning temperatures this cold was from January 15, 2022 to February 2, 2022, a total of 19 consecutive days at 32 degrees or below.
Our frigid month doesn’t end there, as temperatures remain below normal into the third week of January with another cold blast of arctic air expected early next week.
