Gov. McMaster orders flags return to fullstaff for Trump's inauguration

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) -- Gov. Henry McMaster has directed that flags atop the South Carolina Capitol and over state buildings be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, pausing a previous order that lowered flags for 30 days in memory of President Jimmy Carter.
McMaster joins a growing group of Republican governors who announced this week that flags would fly at full height from sunrise to sunset on Jan. 20. House Speaker Mike Johnson has also said flags over the U.S. Capitol will be at full-staff for Donald Trump's inauguration.
The inauguration overlaps with the customary 30-day mourning period observed following the death of a president, during which flags are lowered. President Biden initiated the action on Dec. 29, days after Carter died "peacefully" at his Georgia home at the age of 100.
Trump previously complained on social media about flags being lowered when he took the oath of office, suggesting that Democrats were "giddy" about it.
"Nobody wants to see this, and No American can be happy about it," Trump wrote in a Jan. 3 Truth Social post. "Let's see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICAN GREAT AGAIN!"
Flags will return to half-staff after sunset on Monday, where they will remain until Jan. 28, McMaster said.
