BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A 42-year-old man faces more than two decades in prison after pleading no contest to killing a Caliente man in 2018, and to attempted murder charges filed in another shooting. Michael Joseph Pinon on Tuesday pleaded no contest to charges of voluntary manslaughter and two counts of attempted murder in exchange for the dismissal of multiple other counts, including first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he faces a prison term of 25 years and eight months at next month's sentencing hearing. He remains in Lerdo Jail on $1,750,000 bail. Pinon was already in custody for the other shooting when charged with murder in the the death of 38-year-old Marcos Munoz, whose body was found in December 2018 in the area of Bena Road, west of Caliente Bodfish Road. Some arrested for Los Angeles wildfire looting, arson could face life sentences: DA The bullets found in Munoz's body were linked to Pinon, investigators said in court filings. Pinon had been in frequent contact with Munoz until Dec. 9 -- when he stopped calling. Investigators found that suspicious given that multiple other people kept trying to reach Munoz until his body was located Dec. 18. “I found this to be significant because (Munoz) was not reported missing yet, and had not been found dead yet,” an investigator wrote in the reports. “I believe Pinon had knowledge of, or was involved in (Munoz’s) death, due to the lack of cellular phone communication between them.”
