ROUND ROCK (KXAN) — A group of Stony Point High School students are raising awareness about the dangers of heart disease and how to prevent it through community outreach.
Round Rock Healthy Hearts began as a project for a national competition hosted by HOSA, an organization for students interested in healthcare careers.
"We got a bunch of our friends to get together and brainstorm ideas for how we can help the community," said Dhrupad Krishna, a founding member of Healthy Hearts. "What we came up with, what we thought was the most impactful, was heart health, because of the amount of people that are affected by it."

Round Rock Healthy Hearts is especially focused on educating younger students.
"We went to a few elementary schools in our area to really talk to the kids about keeping a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle," said Enrique Garza, another Healthy Hearts founding member. "It's always something to think about because people really put it off."
"If you just change little things in your habit, like every day drinking water at restaurants, for example, or taking back a bunch of unhealthy fats—that really helps you later on," Garza said.
One of the points the group emphasized was how to prevent heart disease in the first place.

Because the members of Healthy Hearts are not 18, they cannot start a nonprofit. Instead, they use social media like Instagram and TikTok to spread their message.
"We're in a social place where we're primed for stuff like this," Krishna said. "We're primed to spread influence."
