The Yankees added an arm to their organizational depth Wednesday, swinging a trade with the Chicago Cubs for minor-league right-hander Michael Arias. In return, the Yankees sent cash considerations to Chicago. Arias, 23, has not pitched at the MLB level but recorded a 4.77 ERA over 49 appearances, all in relief, for the Cubs’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates last year. He struck out 72 batters over 60.1 innings. Armed with a mid-to-upper 90s fastball, a promising changeup and a work-in-progress slider, Arias was the Cubs’ No. 18 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The Cubs designated Arias for assignment this week, however, to clear a 40-man roster spot for starting pitcher Colin Rea, whom they signed to a one-year, $5 million contract. Arias is now on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, which is up to 38 players. Arias operated as a full-time starter in 2022 and pitched to a 4.09 ERA and 110 strikeouts over 81.1 innings. Overall, he boasts a 4.25 ERA and 227 strikeouts in 182 innings spanning 97 appearances, including 32 starts, over four minor-league seasons. Arias began his career by signing with the Toronto Blue Jays as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He was released two years later and joined the Cubs organization before the 2021 season. It’s the second trade of the offseason between the Yankees and Cubs. Last month, Chicago sent outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger and cash to the Yankees for right-hander Cody Poteet. PRIMETIME Two of the Yankees’ most intriguing early-season matchups are headed to primetime. ESPN is set to air the Yankees’ May 18 home game against the Mets and their June 1 road game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on “Sunday Night Baseball,” the network announced Wednesday. The May 18 game is scheduled to wrap up a three-game series between the Yankees and their crosstown rival, who last month signed Juan Soto away from them for a record-setting 15-year, $765 million contract. The June 1 game, meanwhile, is set to conclude a three-game series between the Yankees and Dodgers that serves as a rematch of the 2024 World Series, which Los Angeles won in five games. ESPN previously announced it would exclusively air the Yankees’ Opening Day game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the Bronx on March 27.
