Montgomery County noted that a cold emergency alert is issued when dangerously cold conditions are present. This can be sub-zero-degree temperatures and wind chills that make it dangerous to be outdoors for a long period.
As a result, MCPS moved all of its outdoor activities that were scheduled for Wednesday inside. This includes recess, all physical education classes and other outdoor activities.
County officials encourage the public to check on neighbors, friends, family members and the elderly community. People who need a place to stay warm can visit libraries or recreation centers across the county.
According to Montgomery County officials, the cold emergency alert will remain effective until noon on Thursday, Jan. 16.
