ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Fire crews responded to the Morgan-Manning House, a historical house in Brockport, Tuesday night for a blaze inside. Main Street at Union Street and the surrounding area is blocked off to traffic as firefighters work the now reported 4-alarm fire. Rochester man accused of lighting wife on fire arrested in Uganda A News 8 photojournalist on the scene captured smoke pouring out from the top of the building at 151 Main Street. A ladder was extended up to the roof from a Brockport Fire District truck. Flames could also be seen from the roof. Reports of a fire at the location surfaced just before 7 p.m. Parts of the roof collapsed, and several windows were broken out. A large portion of Brockport was blanketed with smoke as a result of the massive blaze. Firefighters on the scene said they had to be pulled out of the building at one point as some of the second floor reportedly collapsed down into the first floor. As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, the out-of-control fire kept firefighters from re-entering the building to fully assess the extent of the damage. The Morgan-Manning House is a Victorian-era mansion in the Village of Brockport that houses the Western Monroe Historical Society. According to its website, the building was badly damaged by a fire in 1964. The historical society took it over in 1965 in an effort to preserve and restore the building. "There’s many kids that have at least gone to see Santa here, they go on field trips here and a lot of kids have memories of touring this building for one reason or another… it’s definitely a significant part of our community," said a community member on the scene. "It’s very sad. It’s a piece of history right here it’s irreplaceable. And seeing this amount of fire happening is concerning for the amount of damage that’s happening inside." According to a Village of Brockport employee News 8 spoke to, a meeting was scheduled to be held at the building Tuesday night when the fire was first discovered. Spoke with the Fire Marshal — he says, although the building is significantly damaged from the fire, it’s not as bad as it looks. He’s confident the structure, along with some artifacts inside, are save-able. @News_8 https://t.co/0WchNfElEa— Oran Spitzer (@OranSpitzer) January 15, 2025 Full official statement from SUNY Brockport President Macpherson: The Morgan Manning House is a treasure, an invaluable asset that serves as a hub for our local community.
