What's causing trash pickup delays in Shawnee County?
Jan 15, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) – A local trash collection service is weighing in on why some of its services to certain neighborhoods have been delayed in Shawnee County following a record blizzard.
27 News got in touch with Bill Sutton, director of Shawnee County Solid Waste, about why some people haven't had their trash collected yet. People who live in homes that have dumpsters that back into an alley may have experienced delays recently with trash collection services due to accumulations of snow left behind by a powerful winter storm on Jan. 5.
Shawnee County Solid Waste vehicles have a difficult time accessing some side streets due to the snow. The service asks homeowners to be patient as the city continues to clear away the snow and treat the roads.
Sutton said many people have done great work clearing away snow from trash cans but, due to the 14 inches of snow Topeka received and cars parked in alleyways, trash trucks can't reach all areas yet. Customers are asked to pitch in this week to ensure trash collection can continue as it normally would.
"Please limit bulky items out there," Sutton said. "If you have a couple extra bags, we understand that, and Christmas trees, we understand that. But please, just don't put any bulky items out there."

Shawnee County Solid Waste previously announced changes to its trash pickup schedule following the winter storm. While the service is back on its regular schedule now, it asks homeowners to make sure their trash cans are close to cleared sections.
