At the time, police say Chavez had ten active arrest warrants. After a lengthy chase police say Chavez walled a friend for help. When Chavez tried to get into another car, driven by George Theragood, one officer says he saw Chavez with a gun. The K9 unit and other officers arrive on scene and as officers fire at the suspects the K9 lunges for officer Charles Ovalle and bites down. Police say officer Ovalle, Chavez and Theragood were all shot during the incident. All three were taken to the hospital, where Chavez later died from his injuries. [2] New lawsuit claims CYFD could have prevented toddler’s death - CYFD is facing a lawsuit that claims the agency is responsible for the drug overdose death of a two-year-old boy. In 202 CYFD received a report that Ricky Renova had been born addicted to drugs and tested positive for meth and opiates. According to the lawsuit, nurses said they moved the baby out of his mother's hospital room because they felt the baby wasn't safe. The suit says CYFD sent the baby home with his mother. The toddler died two years later of a fentanyl overdose. [3] Temperatures rollercoaster before windier weather - With very clear skies, air temperatures for nearly all are below freezing with light winds making it feel a little bit colder, but eventually, temperatures will slowly rise ahead with drier air in the short term before our next pattern change kicks up the winds. [4] NM crews share experience of helping fight California wildfires - Nathan Miller is the wildland Superintendent for the City of Santa Fe and the Strike Team leader. The team of 25 from New Mexico fire agencies headed to California last week to help fight fires burning there. Miller says they've spent time protecting neighborhoods and hiking up hills to do "cold mapping" which is making sure there are no hotspots near the fire line. [5] County Commissioners approve $33 million for apartment renovation - Bernalillo County Commissioners approved an ordinance that will give $33 million in project revenue bonds to fund the purchase and rehabilitation of the St. Anthony Plaza Apartments on Indian School. According to the county, plans include upgrading appliance, adding LED lighting, new energy efficient windows and replacing the roof.
