NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Chatter of snow in the south has been circulating all week. We are finally in the forecast range where there are a few more known factors, but still some critical unknowns. Cloud cover remains in place all day. Highs rise into the upper 50s this afternoon, some isolated spots of 60 degrees. A band of rain passes overnight, should be out before the morning commute. Patchy fog may be seen in the morning after the showers. Sunny skies arrive for the rest of the day. Most of Friday remains dry. Showers spark up late into the night on Friday, becoming widespread on Saturday. Now as for what we all want to know... WILL IT SNOW? There is still plenty of time for things to change. However the latest model runs are encouraging the moisture return after the front passes through to be much sooner in the week than previous forecasts. IF this plays out, our temperatures will be suitable for a wintry mix. Each location's temperature profiles may vary slightly which is why I am going with a "mix" and not full out snow or rain/freezing rain event throughout all of the state. We will likely have a massive transition zone from snow to rain and everything in between. Temperatures will vary slightly at each level of the atmosphere, which plays a major role in the type of precipitation seen at the surface. All of what is said above cannot occur is moisture never returns. Which, some models are also indicating. Other have the moisture arriving at the time where our temperatures will no longer be favorable of frozen precipitation. Each day that we get closer to the event. The clearer our image of how this plays out will be. Stay tuned each day for the latest updates. We will be honing in on one of the above options within the next couple of days. What we do know... is that temperatures will be dangerously cold. Especially for the Northshore, begin your winter preparation routines. Exposed pipes should be wrapped. Cover or take in any sensitive vegetation. PETS INSIDE! Check on your neighbors. 11 a.m. Update 5 a.m. Update
