Why are neighborhood streets still icy in Lexington?
Jan 15, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Neighborhood streets across Fayette County are still coated with ice nearly two weeks after winter weather swept through the region, leaving residents and Fayette County Public Schools grappling with ongoing challenges.
While main roads are now clear, icy neighborhood streets remain a significant hazard. Other districts have returned to class, but Fayette County schools are still dealing with conditions that make transportation unsafe.
Efforts to gather a timeline from the city on clearing neighborhood roads have yielded little response. Rob Allen, Lexington’s director of streets and roads, did not return calls or emails from ABC 36. Multiple contacts within the city also declined interview requests, instead directing inquiries to Tuesday nights recorded council meeting.
In a work session video provided to ABC 36, Nancy Albright, Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works, shared insight into the delays.
“We also received almost 200 tree calls, so that takes a crew of 2 to 3 people to go and remove each tree in a safe manner, so we had to suspend snow and ice operations for a few of our drivers to go clear the roads of the downed trees. So that also put a little hiccup and a not so little hiccup in our snow and ice removal. But we are back on snow and ice duty and working until we hopefully are finished this time around” Albright said.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has not yet responded to an interview request for additional information.
