TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — Three people were sent to the hospital after a semi-truck driving north on U.S. 52 slid across the median and collided head-on with a minivan traveling in the opposite direction.
According to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred Tuesday around 10:10 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. 52 and East 600 South, several miles south of Lafayette.
Investigators said the northbound traveling semi was in the left lane when it slid across the median and into oncoming traffic. It was snowing at the time of the crash with snow accumulating on the roadway.
The Freightliner collided head-on with a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica. Two individuals from Lafayette were inside the van and suffered severe injuries. The driver of the van sustained a compound fracture in their leg along with fractures in their shoulder and neck. The passenger in the van suffered severe internal injuries.
The sheriff's department said the semi-driver was also treated at the hospital for complaints of pain but was later released.
Police said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a part in the crash.
