FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) - Police in Fond du Lac say they have recently responded to two separate accidental firearm incidents in about a 40-hour time span.
According to a release from the Fond du Lac Police Department, officers responded to the first incident on Sunday at 6:43 p.m. on the 1000 block of Mihill Avenue after a man accidentally shot himself in the hand.
Officials say the 20-year-old man from Van Dyne was visiting family and had disassembled the handgun. While in the process of putting it back together, he reportedly inserted a magazine that he did not know was loaded and shot himself in the hand.

Police on the scene report that there was a bullet hole in an interior wall of the kitchen that traveled to an exterior wall which absorbed the bullet and kept it from exiting the home.
Officers add that members of the man's family were in the home at the time of the accidental incident but the handgun was never pointed in their direction.
Police responded to the second incident on Tuesday at 12:17 p.m. at a home on the 500 block of Grove Street after a 27-year-old Fond du Lac man was preparing to clear a handgun for storage but failed to remove the magazine and accidentally shot a round through a bedroom wall.
Officers on the scene say the man was in a second-story bedroom and while the bullet did pass through an exterior wall, no damage was seen to the house next door.

Other roommates were said to be in the home at the time of the incident but never had the handgun pointed in their direction.
Amid these two recent firearm incidents, authorities are reminding the public to make sure that firearm safety is a top priority in their homes.
In under 40 hours we responded to two accidental discharges of a handgun. While I am relieved that the injuries sustained in the incidents were not life-threatening, these serve as a reminder of the importance of firearm safety. Firearm safety is non-negotiable. Accidental discharges, particularly when handling or cleaning firearms can result in serious consequences. By following essential fundamental rules of firearms safety like treating every firearm as if it’s loaded, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and keeping your finger off the trigger will prevent avoidable accidents.
