BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Missouri River runoff in 2024 was at 91 percent of normal, and things don't appear to be improving in 2025. That's the assessment of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in its January 2025 Missouri River Update. "For the 2024 calendar year, Missouri River basin runoff above Sioux City, Iowa totaled 23.3 million acre-feet, 91% of average," the report notes. "Dry conditions continue to affect the upper Missouri River Basin at the start of the 2025 calendar year, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is forecasting below-average runoff into the mainstem reservoir system. For 2025, runoff in the Missouri River basin above Sioux City, Iowa is forecast to be 20.2 MAF, 79% of average." The corps says the 2025 forecast is based on current runoff trends, drier-than-normal soil conditions, and below-average plains and mountain snowpack. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the river's reservoir system to support and balance eight congressionally mandated purposes during extended droughts: Flood control, navigation, water supply, irrigation, hydropower, recreation, water quality control, and fish and wildlife. The corps notes at this point and looking ahead, there's enough water in the river for all water supply needs. You can read the full U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report here.
