Beachwood has named Jonathan Gonell as its new head football coach
Gonnell was approved by the Beachwood board of education at its regular meeting on Jan. 13. He takes the spot formerly held by Scott Fischer, who served as head coach for the past three seasons.
“I am honored and thrilled to join the Beachwood community as the head football coach,” Gonell said. “Football is a powerful tool for teaching life lessons, and I am committed to developing our student-athletes both on and off the field. I look forward to building a program that embodies teamwork, resilience and excellence, reflecting the values of this exceptional community.”
Gonell played football at Mount Union, earning all-conference and all-region honors in helping the Purple Raiders to a 58-2 record and two national titles. Following his playing career, he was an assistant at Mount Union for four years, then was an assistant coach at Avon and Shaker Heights high schools.
Gonell currently serves as a physical education teacher at Shaker Heights. He holds a bachelor’s degree in healthcare management with a minor in economics from Mount Union. He also has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Ohio University. His teaching experience spans elementary physical education, high school strength and conditioning, and health education.
Said Beachwood athletic director Ryan Peters, “Coach Gonell’s proven leadership, championship experience and passion for mentoring young athletes make him the perfect fit for Beachwood. We are excited about the future of Bison football under his guidance.”
