FORECAST: The bitter cold continues Wednesday
Jan 14, 2025
The wind and cold will be the most impactful through Wednesday morning when wind chills bottom out. Cold Weather Advisories are in effect again across the mountains, where feels-like temperatures could reach -15 to -20 before sunrise. Elsewhere in the DMV, there will be 20-30 mph winds with air temperatures in the teens, creating wind chills in the 0-5 degree range. Be sure to have layers and plenty of ways to stay warm if you're in this cold for a long time. It will remain windy and cold throughout the day but warm up to the freezing mark in the afternoon.
Another clipper system will arrive on Thursday as the winds subside, producing another round of mountain snow with flurries possible to the east. Air temperatures will climb back into the lower to middle 30s area-wide, ending this brief cold snap. Temperatures will return to the 40s by Friday under sunny skies and a southerly wind.
This warmer air will arrive just in time, with the next impactful storm system arriving on Saturday. With temperatures still in the 40s, this storm will bring widespread rain across the DMV to kick off the weekend. The exact arrival time of this rain is still up in the air, but we should all be ready for a soggy day. The forecast gets tricky as temperatures drop on Sunday and early next week. There is a chance this storm system could linger nearby, producing additional precipitation before the weekend is over. If that scenario were to happen, a rain/snow mix would be possible across the DMV on Sunday, with wintry precipitation more likely to the west. Some models show dry conditions on Sunday into the following Monday, so there is no guarantee that precipitation will happen. We'll be watching the extended forecast closely as things come together.
