CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The open burning season starts Wednesday in Massachusetts, but weather conditions may limit permits issued over the next few days. California wildfires continue burning: how to help While open burning season does begin on Wednesday, burning is always subject to safety and environmental restrictions, and because we are seeing very dry windy conditions across Massachusetts, local fire departments may delay issuing burning permits. Even once the season begins, open burning is only allowed once you get a permit from your local fire department. Burns must happen between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., at least 75 feet from any buildings, as close as possible to the source of material being burned, and when it does not contribute to air pollution.  Last fall’s unprecedented fire season revealed just how quickly outdoor fires can grow out of control, especially in the dry, windy conditions we are seeing.  When burning this season, firefighters urge people to use common sense. Burn only approved materials, and don't wait for the fire department to tell you it is unsafe to burn. Put the fire out if winds pick up, and if it does get out of control, call 911 immediately.  Anyone who burns illegally could be held liable for firefighting costs, face fines, or even jail time. Remember, it is your responsibility to be able to put out a fire at a moment's notice.
