Rochester Councilmember Mary Lupien to challenge Malik Evans for mayor

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Mary Lupien, a Rochester city councilmember, will be running for mayor.
Though she has yet to formally announce her candidacy, her campaign manager, Dylan Dailor, confirmed her intention to run to News 8 Tuesday night.
A resident of the North Winton Village, Lupien, a Democrat, represents the East District.
Asked why Lupien is challenging a fellow Democrat, Dailor says Lupien believes Evans has not done enough to directly help Rochester residents.
He pointed to the millions being invested in the ROC The Riverway initiative saying Lupien believes that money should be sent to residents to use now.
“A lot of institutions are failing, and we need to think outside the box for solutions to problems facing our city,” Dailor said.
Lupien has been a lightning rod in her time on council, taking controversial positions on issues such as police funding and a Gaza ceasefire resolution.
Lupien has also championed tenant rights and promises to ensure everyone has access to affordable housing.
On policing, she says she'll work to have “trained professionals respond to mental health crises,” not police.
Lupien's announcement will follow Evans' official bid for reelection declaration, during which he noted a drop in violent crime under his watch and, unlike Lupien, painted the infrastructure investment as a win for the city and testament to his business acumen.
Evans himself ousted an incumbent mayor, Lovely Warren, promising less drama at City Hall.
Lupien plans to make her announcement official by the end of the month. Another Democratic candidate in the running for Rochester Mayor is Shashi Sinha, a local entrepreneur and IT expert who announced his candidacy last week.
