WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- JEO Consulting Group, Inc., the engineering firm behind the new Amidon Avenue Bridge over the Arkansas River in north Wichita, has received the Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Kansas. The award is for the bridge that opened in November 2023 after crews replaced the previous 60-year-old bridge that had exceeded its service life. JEO was the principal designer and project manager for the bridge that carries approximately 16,000 vehicles daily across the river. JEO says the design used innovative features like semi-integral abutments, a method not often seen in Kansas, that eliminated the need for expansion joints that frequently need repair. The firm also used seismic sensors to optimize bridge pile lengths and alternative materials that kept the project completion date on time and saved millions of dollars in costs. J.V. Johnston is Wichita’s new vice mayor “JEO had a great team on this project,” says JEO structural senior project manager Brad Shores. “The Amidon Avenue bridge is another chapter in the legacy of iconic bridges in Wichita, and we’re honored to have been part of that legacy.” TranSystems managed road design and utility coordination, and Terracon led geotechnical investigation and design. The trade group recognized JEO with the Engineering Excellence Award under the Structural Systems category.
