You better be ready to defend. You better be ready to run. And you better be ready to make clutch plays. Ewing won the latest chapter Tuesday evening when it edged Trenton at home, 63-57, in a game that featured six ties and 13 lead changes. “That was an old-fashioned Trenton versus Ewing game, back 25-plus years, where we were both going at it down the stretch,” Ewing coach Paul Jones said. “We made some key plays, blocks, boxing out, and then on the offensive end I think we kept our composure really well down the stretch.” Guards Terrance Traylor and Davion Morton led the way with 14 points apiece, but it was the team’s defense and rebounding that really separated Ewing in the grand scheme of things. Jones said that the team works extensively on rebounding every day in practice, and that paid off especially in the first half as Ewing got out to a 32-29 lead while attempting four more shots from the field than Trenton despite turning the ball over 10 times to Trenton’s eight. “Without the ball you can’t go score,” Jones said. “So that’s our biggest thing: Let’s rebound, let’s run, let’s use our athleticism.” After losing senior forward Cameron James before the season to a torn labrum, the Blue Devils rallied around each other. They knew they had a deep team, and that started with big men Joel Cineus, Brandon Williams, Jessiah Stephenson and Leslie Summiel rising to the occasion. “Everybody knew that he was a big part of our team, so not just one person but everybody had to step up and do a little bit more to fill what we were missing,” Traylor said. Williams, a 6-foot-5 junior, had a career-high 10 points and key offensive rebounds while coming off the bench. Cineus, Summiel and Stephenson combined for 17 points and also contributed on the glass. In the backcourt, Kristian Thomas chipped in eight points including two free throws in the final minute. Sidney Richards played a vital role defensively, Jones said, especially with a blocked shot in a tense fourth quarter. “We know that they’re going to be 94 feet of aggressive defense the whole game. We’ve got to be ready for that challenge,” Traylor said of the mentality when facing Trenton. “I think staying composed and playing good defense and making our free throws really put us over the top.” Aivaye Ingram dropped a game-high 22 points for Trenton. Qadir Dixon finished with 15 and Thomas Munoz had 10 including two consecutive 3-pointers that supplied the Tornadoes with a 45-43 lead going into the fourth quarter. But Trenton converted only three field goals in the fourth quarter and shot about 35 percent for the game, which is what Ewing wanted to happen as it mixed in different zone defenses to keep the visitors off balance. “Our biggest thing is throwing different defenses at teams,” Jones said. “The more we keep teams on their heels, the better we are, because if we’re able to, let’s say, go from a 2-3 (zone) to a 1-3-1, it gives them a different look and now they have to pull the ball back out and run some different offense than what they anticipate.” With 7:02 remaining, Cineus scored a fastbreak layup after recording a steal to give Ewing a 46-45 lead that it would not relinquish. The Blue Devils, who started the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run, didn’t allow the Tornadoes to rally within one possession for the remainder of the game. “We know them pretty well,” Traylor said. “Trenton, Ewing is like right there next to each other. Some of those guys are our friends. You ball with them sometimes. It was a great environment.” Ewing is now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the CVC. Despite being a young team with only three seniors, the Blue Devils feel good about their chances to grow and honor the school’s winning tradition when the playoffs roll around in February and March. A win like Tuesday’s in a raucous atmosphere was a pivotal step on that journey. “This is a big win for them, especially mentally, to help them propel, to see that we’re a damn good team,” Jones said. “It just showed us that we can play in these types of games.” TRENTON (57) Dixon 5-2-15, Munoz 3-2-10, Ingram 10-1-22, Sanchez 2-3-8, Grant 1-0-2.
