City leaders limit funding to fix Hotel Topeka
Jan 14, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - After receiving $174,000 in funding requests for repairs at Hotel Topeka, the City of Topeka votes to use $32,000 of that request for now.
Topeka leaders had several discussions about the Hotel Topeka, and ultimately decided to grant one funding request Tuesday evening. The Topeka Development Corporation (TDC), made up of the Topeka City Council members, were presented with two funding requests: one funding request of $142,338 to go towards construction of a handicap accessible walkway as well as other repairs, while another request of $32,191.55 would go towards repairing a service elevator.
At the TDC meeting, the board voted to defer the additional Hotel Topeka funding request of $142,338; the motion passed, while TDC Director Sylvia Ortiz opposed the motion. The TDC did not set a date or time for when the funding request is to be deferred to.

Multiple TDC Directors want to speak to Shawnee County commissioners before making a decision on the $142,338 funding request.
"First of all we are committed to selling that hotel by the end of this year, so we're looking at every expense as whether we need to put that in or the next owner needs to put the work in," TDC Director Spencer Duncan said. "And two, some of that will be on county property and we want to go back and have a conversation with the county on about maybe them being a partner in that investment since it will also improve county property."
At Tuesday's meeting, the TDC approved the funding request of $32,191 to repair a service elevator at Hotel Topeka. Topeka Assistant City Manager Braxton Copley said at the meeting this repair is "a necessity, not a luxury". TDC Directors Marcus Miller and David Banks opposed the motion.
In Tuesday's city council meeting, after the TDC meeting, the councilmembers approved funds to repair a service elevator at Hotel Topeka. The following four councilmembers opposed the motion: District 2 Christina Valdivia-Alcala, District 3 Sylvia Ortiz District 6 Marcus Miller and District 4 David Banks.
Since they made the decision to purchase the building in 2023, the governing body has made similar funding approvals to maintain Hotel Topeka. City councilmembers approved $500,000 to help operate the building in February 2024 and a little more than $72,000 in December 2024.

In 2024, Hotel Topeka was described as a ‘distressed asset‘, with costs nearing $10 million in October 2024 after the approval of an additional $201,000 for the structure. Topeka City Council was informed late last year that the hotel would see a nearly $900,000 net operating loss in 2025.
