Warmer weather returns by the end of the week

A gradual warming trend has started today and will continue through Friday. Another winter storm moves in this weekend bringing snow and the coldest air so far this season.
After a cold, and for some, foggy start to the morning in New Mexico, temperatures this afternoon started a warming trend. High temperatures are still cooler than average, but are a couple degrees warmer compared to Monday. This slow and gradual warming trend will continue each day this week through Friday, with highs back up to around average on Thursday, then climbing above average on Friday. A quick-moving weather disturbance may even bring in a few spotty, light rain and snow showers into western and central New Mexico Friday morning. Drier weather returns by the afternoon as westerly winds pick up. Winds could gust up to 50 mph in eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon.
An Arctic cold front will begin moving through New Mexico Saturday. This will bring snow to southern Colorado and parts of northern New Mexico, especially along and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains down to the I-25 corridor. Snow will continue these areas into Sunday as very cold air continues to settle into New Mexico. Another blast of Arctic air will move in Sunday night into Monday bringing some of the coldest air this season. Many places will not make it above freezing Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday morning will see bitterly cold air temperatures across the state, with parts of western and northern New Mexico dropping below-zero. The bigger question is the snow potential with this second wave of arctic air. Some forecast models want to bring widespread snowfall across New Mexico Sunday night through Monday.
