RIDOT begins demolishing Greystone Bridge
Jan 14, 2025
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has started tearing down the Greystone Bridge.
The small bridge used to carry traffic over the Woonasquatucket River, but RIDOT closed it back in July 2020 after it was deemed structurally deficient.

Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena Jr. told 12 News he's disappointed in RIDOT's decision to knock the bridge down, but understands that it was not his decision to make.
"I am disappointed, but still hopeful that Johnston and North Providence can work together to find our own solution going forward," Polisena said in a statement.
Chris Gosetti, a Johnston resident, had been pushing back against RIDOT's plan to demolish the bridge, arguing that it's a main path to Route 44.
“The traffic is horrendous on Route 44,” Gosetti said. “It affects everybody. You wont get out of line to go to a business because you’ll lose your spot and it could take you 25 minutes to get back in line.”
RIDOT expects the bridge to be completely demolished sometime in February.
