SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- We are coming up on the one year anniversary of the death of Moody County Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok, who was killed in the line of duty. Now the community of Flandreau and a couple of surrounding towns are coming together to hold fundraisers to honor not only Prorok's sacrifices, but all law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. At Renee Prorok's home, there's a shrine remembering her late husband Ken. "We are just very fortunate to have the blessings that we do, but it's been a year of grief, you know, it's been a challenging year for that too," Prorok said. Almost a year ago her husband Ken was killed in the line of duty. On February 2, 2024, Ken was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle being pursued by police. "As long as I'm in charge, as long as I'm around, I never intend on letting Ken's memory or February 2 pass without at least acknowledging the date and the sacrifice that he paid," Moody County Sheriff Troy Wellman said. To help honor that sacrifice Wellman, some of his deputies and other staff members want to travel to Washington D.C. in May for National Law Enforcement Week. It's a week filled with all kinds of events to remember fallen officers who died in the line of duty. "We're trying to get 12 of us to go to D.C., it's about $2,000 a person by the time we have plane tickets and hotels for the week, the county was able to put about $10,000 toward that effort," Wellman said. But they'll need your help. So area schools, including Chester where Ken coached for a number of years and his son still plays, will be hosting walking taco fundraisers during basketball games. Jamie Gaspar of JJ's Coffee Spot is one of the sponsors. She says they want to help in any way they can, because the Moody County deputies are regulars at her store. "Supporting them is huge in a small community, because that's who we call when we need something and sometimes I think they have a thankless job," Gaspar said. For Wellman, the trip to D.C. will be one filled with mixed emotions. "I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like as a survivor, but I also wish I wasn't having to go out there as a survivor at the same time," Wellman said. Renee Prorok will also be going to Washington D.C .for National Law Enforcement Week. Joseph Gene Hoek, who is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated eluding, will go on trial two days after she gets back.
