Two charged with animal cruelty in Destrehan

DESTREHAN, La. (WGNO) — Two Destrehan residents were arrested following an animal cruelty investigation that was reported on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies and animal control officers responded to allegations of animal cruelty at 214 Murray Hill Drive.
On scene, deputies discovered that 49-year-old Doug Russell had reportedly used a machete to discipline a dog that was attacking another dog at the home the night before. Deputies say Russell did not provide aid to the dogs afterward.

Inside of the home, deputies say they found multiple emaciated and injured dogs, which were taken to an animal shelter for medical treatment by animal control agents.
Russell was arrested and faces charges of seven counts of simple animal cruelty, two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and seven counts of rabies vaccinations (required.) 48-year-old Melissa LeBlanc, who deputies also spoke to, was also arrested. She faces seven counts of simple animal cruelty and seven counts of rabies vaccinations (required.)
Both suspects were taken to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center and booked accordingly.
