LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Leavenworth, Kansas police are investigating a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian that happened last Tuesday. “The vehicle that struck him did not remain on scene. So now we're looking for that vehicle and driver,” said Leavenworth Deputy Police Chief Dan Nicodemus.  Patrick Mahomes talks birth of baby girl ahead of Texans matchup On Jan. 7, 55-year-old Chad Taylor was at home with his wife, trying to get a car out of the snow. Chad slipped and fell partially onto S. 10th Avenue. A car passing by ran over his leg and took off.  “He would give you the shirt off his back, always there to help somebody. That's why this situation really makes me mad because if that person's car were stuck, he'd be the first person out there trying to help them,” said family friend Kyle Perrin.  The hit-and-run happened on Jan. 7. Taylor was taken to the hospital with a broken ankle, knee and leg.  Perrin said Taylor was sent home from the hospital several hours later to wait for the swelling to go down enough to cast his broken bones. But that never happened; Taylor passed away in his sleep on the morning of Jan. 9. Taylor was a father, husband and Navy veteran.  Perrin set up a GoFundMe to help Taylor's wife, Andrea, with funeral costs. Leavenworth police officers are investigating the hit-and-run and have reviewed security footage from homes and businesses in the area, but so far, that hasn’t led to any leads.  “It was just before 6 p.m., it was dark out. The best description that we have of the vehicle from witnesses is that it is a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a small black vehicle, maybe a hatchback or a crossover-type vehicle,” Nicodemus said.  Nicodemus said they heard multiple witnesses say that the driver appeared to be female, but police have not yet verified that.  Leavenworth police are waiting on an autopsy report to confirm the final cause of death.  “We need to be cautious and make sure what the cause of death was for the gentleman. It could be related. It could not be, but nonetheless, we still need to find the driver and the vehicle, and we can get this cleared up,” Nicodemus said.  “We are waiting on specific answers. All we've heard from the medics is that it was a possible blood clot embolism that could have been from the accident,” Perrin said.  Loved ones want to see the person responsible held accountable for their actions. “It's very important to us. It was an accident, but for her (the driver) to stop when it happened, and look, and saw that she hit somebody and then to drive off after that,  it’s devastating,” Perrin said. “So we really want to find who did it. We want her to be held accountable and just bring a little bit of closure to us and his family.” Deputy Police Chief Dan Nicodemus says finding the person responsible for the hit-and-run remains a priority. And that's what we want to do,” Nicodemus said.  The hit and run happened in the 1800 block of S. 10th Avenue around 6 p.m. on Jan. 7. “We’re asking the public to scan their home video and security video to see if they've got anything from the evening of the 7th, 10 minutes before six to about 10 minutes after,” Nicodemus said. “And even- (if you live) down the street, four or five or six blocks from this area, and see if you have anything on your particular video that we might be able to use of the vehicle driving to or from the scene.” If you have any information about this hit-and-run, call the Leavenworth Police Department or the Leavenworth hotline at (913) 682-CLUE (2583).
