WinstonSalem 'cyber event' affects contractors

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- For more than three weeks, Winston-Salem's City Network has been down after being disputed by a cyber event.
While taxpayers currently pay their bills online, contractors are running into issues as well.
Serving customers has been a little harder these days for crews at Transou's Plumbing and Septic after the cyber event.
While the outage has temporarily stopped online payments for customers, General Manager Josh Carlin says contractors like himself can't access inspection schedules.
Without services such as plumbing and electrical, some projects have been put on hold.
"We've had several jobs with open permits, and we can't actually get them inspected. We have open ditches and customers waiting … That's one of our main concerns right now," Carlin said.
Carlin says it's an issue since the cyber event was first reported on Dec. 26.
"We can't finish the job ... We can't collect until our job is finished," Carlin said.
While people wait for Winston-Salem's network to be restored, Carlin had some words of advice for people dealing with contractors while the backlog piles up.
"All we can say is to be patient. We'll do what we can. A lot of times, we can do small repairs where we can get ... by until we do the major work," Carlin said.
FOX8 reached out to the city manager for an update on the cause of the cyber event.
Their administrative assistant says there is no update at this time.
Several agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, are working together to find the cause of it.
