GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been caught up in a scandal after lab analyst Yvonne Woods was caught manipulating the results of over 1,000 DNA tests, used to preserve evidence of sexual assault. Woods' actions have been attributed to the current long backlog, that now takes 500-plus days to process. "Justice delayed is justice denied," said State Rep. Matt Soper of Delta. "CBI should invest in their lab. They should expand with scientists to be able to do testing. They should also be willing to contract out to be able to maximize the use of the lab." The backlog was brought to the attention of state lawmakers during a recent Department of Public Safety Oversight hearing, after a sexual assault victim testified to waiting more than 400 days for DNA results in their case. WesternSlopeNow reached out to CBI for an on-camera interview and was emailed this statement instead.
