NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) --Tuesday night, the newly elected Charleston County Council Chairman Kylon Middleton laid out his five-point plan for the future. The main takeaway from new Chairman Middleton and Vice Chair Larry Kroborsky was that they want the county council to prioritize the people's best interests while being fiscally responsible with their tax dollars. He began his announcement that the council will conduct a countywide audit to improve efficiency and accountability. "This audit will be vital in ensuring that each department within our county government is operating at its best. We owe it to our taxpayers to make sure every dollar is spent wisely," said Middleton. In his second point, the chairman said he will refocus on issues that matter most to citizens. County council will prioritize projects such as the highway 41 expansion, the low country rapid transit, as well as the 995 Morrison drive site that will provide affordable housing for essential workers. "For too long, some critical projects have been delayed or neglected. We cannot afford to wait any longer. Traffic congestion, for example, is one of the biggest concerns we hear about from residents, and it’s time for action," said Middleton. His third point is ensuring transparency in all county business. Middleton and Kobrovsky spoke on building a bipartisan coalition together on the council -- making sure every councilmember has a voice. Kobrovsky added that the bipartisan results of the referendum will have influence on what they do in the future. "When we saw the results of the recent referendum there was a bipartisan coalition for fiscal conservatism and also conservation and all we love about living here almost 2/3rds of the vote. That gives us potential to build on and I expect us to do that," said Kobrovsky. The fourth point is to support law enforcement and to ensure public safety. Middleton wants to make sure their law enforcement agencies are supported with resources, but also that the community trusts in their officers "Public safety is not just about resources; it’s also about building trust and strengthening relationships between law enforcement and our community. In my former life I was the project leader for the illumination project in the city of Charleston with the city of Charleston police department and vulnerable communities and we were able to make that happen," said Middleton. And the final point is highlighting and building on the good work already done in the county.
