BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The city of Central is embracing a bold vision for its future with the "Mainstreet 2030" initiative, a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing the community, improving infrastructure, and addressing long-standing flooding issues. Mayor Wade Evans shared the city's goals, emphasizing the importance of creating a thriving, resilient community for residents. One of the plan's key elements is the establishment of a central downtown area. Mayor Evans explained that the city has long needed a clear identity and a focal point for economic and social activity. "We needed to find our identity," Evans said. "It's been a discussion since we became a city—where are we going to have a city center? Now, we're building that vision with downtown buildings and architecture right here in the heart of our city, between Sullivan Road and Hooper." A significant focus of "Mainstreet 2030" is tackling Central's persistent flooding issues. The city is investing in new drainage systems, upgraded roads, and a four-lane highway to address these challenges. "The backbone of this whole design and concept is this massive flood control project," Evans explained, pointing to a map of the area. "The idea was: how do we dig a lake big enough to positively impact Beaver Bayou's flooding problems?" In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the city is working on several key developments, including a storm shelter that could double as an entertainment center. "City hall construction has started in earnest," he said. "We're looking forward to providing residents with a facility that represents Central's growth and progress." With a focus on infrastructure, economic development, and community building, the city of Central is paving the way for a vibrant future.
