Sixteen San Diego County arts organizations were awarded a combined $305,000 in grants Tuesday morning from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Individual grants to local organizations ranged from $10,000 to $40,000, and they cover a wide range of art forms, including visual art exhibits, a children’s opera, school music composition and choir programs, free dance classes and theater, Latino film and Juneteenth festivals.
Several grants were awarded in the field of arts training, including the largest grant of $40,000 to an Escondido arts group that will offer high school and college students technical theater career training.
Here’s the list of locally awarded grants and how the money will be used.
Positive Action Community Theatre: The Encinitas organization received $20,000 to support theater skill-building workshops and live performances made available online.
California Center for the Arts Escondido Foundation: The Escondido arts center foundation received $40,000 to support a technical theater workforce development program.
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego: The La Jolla-based arts museum received $25,000 to support an arts career development program that serves high school students in San Diego.
La Jolla Playhouse: The La Jolla theater company received $20,000 to support its annual free-to-the-public Without Walls (WOW) Festival, being presented April 24-27 on the campus of UC San Diego.
Art of Elan: The San Diego classical music organization received $10,000 to support after-school music composition residencies for youth.
Bach Collegium: The San Diego early-music organization received $25,000 to support the recording, post-production, and distribution of a recording of Handel’s El Mesias (Messiah), using a Spanish translation of the libretto, as part of America250.
Bodhi Tree Concerts: The San Diego concert organization received $15,000 to support educational and outreach activities for its world premiere of a new American children’s opera, “Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis and librettist Quincy Troupe.
Classics 4 Kids: This San Diego children’s concert organization received $10,000 to support an orchestral concert series for children, with associated outreach activities.
Cooper Family Foundation: This San Diego organization will use its $25,000 grant to produce the 2025 Juneteenth Arts Celebration and Festival.
COTA (Collaborations: Teachers and Artists): This San Diego arts education group received $20,000 it will use to support year-long professional development for teachers.
Media Arts Center San Diego: This arts group serving under-represented communities received $25,000 it will use to support the San Diego Latino Film Festival and related public programming.
Project BLANK: This San Diego multidisciplinary music and arts organization received $20,000 it will use to support an arts performance.
Sacra/Profana: This San Diego professional choral ensemble received $10,000 it will use to support a choral program for middle and high school students.
San Diego Arts Institute: This San Diego visual arts organization received $20,000 it will use for a solo exhibition featuring new works by Dutch artist Afra Eisma.
San Diego Ballet: This San Diego dance company received $10,000 it will use to support a free dance education program.
San Diego State University Foundation: This SDSU-based group received $30,000 it will use to support an exhibition of American art demonstrating how certain objects become valued, collected, and remembered as heirlooms.
