'Pulling all our resources': Los Angeles Bills Backers rally in the face of devastation
Jan 14, 2025
LOS ANGELES, C.A. (WROC) - In southern California, millions of people are on alert as powerful winds re-enter the region. As of now, at least 24 people have been killed in the devastating fires with dozens still missing.
Even through the tragedy, communities have begun rallying together to support one another. That includes Bills Mafia, which is known for its ability to rally around a cause.
The Los Angeles Bills Backers formed in 2005. Ever since, a loyal following of Bills fans have banded together to support the team from California. Last Sunday was no different, even days after the wildfires tore through the Pacific Palisades area— close to the group's home base.
"The fires have now been put out just about. The smoke was everywhere. It spread throughout the entire city," said Anthony Mariani, co-president of the LA Bills Backers.
Mariani is a Buffalo-area native and grew up in Clarence, New York. He says the foundation the group has built on the West Coast has only grown in the 20 years they've been running.
"Considering the people who lost their houses, property, and otherwise, people have been able to pull together really well over this last week. It's crazy how much we've been able to do over seven days," said Daniel Godwin, co-president of the South Bay LA Bills Backers.
Bills Backers groups from across the state have rallied with donations of all kinds to give back to victims hit the hardest.
The clubs raised nearly $8,500 for local charities over the weekend, while rooting for the Bills during their victory win over the Broncos.
"We want to do our best to live up to the Bills Mafia name we're known for," said Mariani.
As the fans embark on the road to recovery, they say their love for the team stands strong.
"To have that community together to lean on each other for support through these tough times is great. But, it's also being able to watch our Bills for definitely the biggest game of the year [ahead], if not, the decade. It's definitely up there. We're pulling all our resources. Bills Mafia is family," said Mariani.
Both co-presidents anticipate about 500 people will gather at their usual spot in LA to watch the Bills play the Ravens in the AFC Divisional Round this Sunday.
