VISALIA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A new culinary experience is now being offered in Visalia, promising to provide a taste of rural Mexico.
Since Claudia Cristel Jensen was a little girl in Mexico, food has been the way she stays connected to her roots and community.
"I grew up smelling, tasting, even playing with some of the food, tasting whatever my grandmas were making for the family," said Jensen.
Jensen grew up in rural parts of Mexico, her dad from Michoacán and mom from Guanajuato, giving her what she describes as the best of both worlds.
She migrated to the United States when she was 26, and to avoid losing touch with her roots, while also protecting her mental health “Quererte, La Cocina Del Pueblo" was born.
Now she's selling meals out of her home and offering deliveries in the Visalia area.
“Quererte is to love to love you, to appreciate you, and you as your partner as your friend and also to love yourself," said Jensen.
Rooted in the traditions, flavors and the way she grew up, Jensen is creating a culinary space where people feel welcomed and appreciated with every bite through "Taste for Friends."
"Taste for Friends" is Jensen's way of giving back by inviting community organizers into her home for free meals.
"Something that I keep hearing is that we have access to different Mexican flavors, however this traditional way of cooking, not so much," said Jensen.
Now Jensen is also offering meals to the public for $25 you can pick up a 4-course meal offering dishes like Crema Poblano, Chicken Milanesa, Cafe de Olla, freshly squeezed natural juices, a soup of the day, and a dessert.
“Through my food, through the flavors, through the recipes, that my family has been cooking for generations I want people to feel excited, that's what I want people to taste in my food," said Jensen.
