J.V. Johnston is Wichita's new vice mayor

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - J.V. Johnston is no longer only a Wichita City Council member. He is also vice mayor now.
Fellow councilors unanimously selected Johnston to fill the largely ceremonial seat. He says he believes council members all share common goals.
"We have different roads of getting there, but we all have the same goals, and we all get along, and I continue to work together and hopefully foster that even further," he said.
Johnston takes over for Maggie Ballard, who was vice mayor in 2024.
"I've gotten a lot of different and new opportunities that I wouldn't have normally had just in District Six, so I learned a lot. Met a lot of new people, and I'm looking forward to the next year," said Ballard.
Council members rotate as vice mayor every year. They fill in for the mayor when they can not make meetings or events.
Johnston was elected as the District 5 council member in 2023. He was born in Topeka but grew up in southeast Wichita. After he graduated from Newman University, he worked full-time at his family's business, Johnston's Clothiers, from 1995 until the store closed in 2021.
