WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Zookeepers shared some exciting news about one of the five pregnant elephants at Sedgwick County Zoo. They got a video of the elephant calf kicking its mother in the side.
"We just witnessed something truly incredible - Talia's little one moving!" the zoo posted on Facebook. "This special moment is a rare glimpse into the journey of elephant pregnancy, which, as most of you now know, lasts nearly two years!"
The five pregnant African elephants will give birth between early spring and fall. Simunye is due first. She is the only expectant elephant who has given birth before. Talia, Xolani, Arusi, and Zuberi are all pregnant with their first offspring.

Sedgwick County Zoo has been providing "Elephant Bumpdates" on its Facebook page. The zoo says the expectant moms get regular ultrasounds as part of their specialized care and training.
"As we eagerly await the arrival of our newest herd members, we remain cautiously optimistic as everything is progressing as it should."
In October, the zoo launched the “Our Growing Herd” capital campaign to raise $10 million. The goal is to expand the boma to provide more bonding space and allow additional options to keep the herd comfortable as it grows. There would also be ample room to roam, play, and socialize, especially during winter when temperatures are too cold for the calves.
