PHILADELPHIA — Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, once considered the Dallas Cowboys’ “head coach in waiting,” is ripe for the poaching. Moore, who already has received interest from the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars, wouldn’t confirm Tuesday if he had been contacted by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. But Jones just parted ways with Mike McCarthy after five seasons and needs a new man to front his operation in Big D. “I spent a lot of time there, eight years there, and so I obviously have plenty of relationships about that place,” Moore said. “I love it here, I’ve had so much fun here. It’s been a really fun process, and we’re in a really special situation right now, getting a chance to play this Sunday. We have a chance to make a run at this thing, and that’s really all you worry about. Everything else is what it is, and we’ll see where it takes you.” During the postseason, the NFL has staggered interview cycles for coaches on teams that are still alive each week. A brief window opens on Wednesday in which Moore can interview with Jones and the Cowboys. Many Eagles fans have been frustrated with some of Moore’s play-calling at times, including against the Packers in the wild-card round, but there’s no denying his overall success this year. The Birds are eighth in the league in total offense (367.2 yards per game), including second in rushing (179.3 ypg) and seventh in scoring (27.2 points per game). However, with a run-heavy approach built around Saquon Barkley — which has helped give this team an offensive identity — and with quarterback Jalen Hurts missing most of the last three games of the regular season, the Eagles ended up 29th in passing (187.9 ypg). In fairness, that unbalanced ranking isn’t reflective of where they were most of the season, which was in or around the top half of the league. Moore, a former backup quarterback in Dallas, joined the Cowboys’ coaching staff in 2018 under Jason Garrett. Within a year, he became offensive coordinator and was viewed within the organization as Garrett’s eventual successor. When the time came in 2020, Jones opted for McCarthy instead, but held on to Moore as OC It was only when McCarthy took over play-calling duties at the end of the 2022 season that Moore was jettisoned and quickly signed by San Diego. Jones, known for undermining many of his head coaches, wanted to give McCarthy more autonomy over the offense. “Well, I had everything to do with that,” Jones, 82, later said of Moore’s departure. “Normally with Mike’s background, when he came in, normally he would have come in in charge of the offense and specifically calling the plays. I normally would have done that. But we didn’t do it because we had Kellen and we wanted to — we thought that was the best way to win games. “We decided to go forward with Mike calling the plays and, by the way, installing. You don’t call if you don’t install, and so Mike installs and he calls.” Other names linked to the Cowboys’ coaching vacancy include Deion Sanders, who said he has spoken with Jones, and Minnesota Vikings assistant Brian Flores. If Moore departs for Dallas, it would mean Hurts having to learn his fifth offensive system in six years as a pro. For now, he remains an Eagle. Follow Christiaan DeFranco on X at @the_defranc.
