MANHATTAN (KSNT) - The City of Manhattan has announced the newest director of the Flint Hills Discovery Center. The City of Manhattan appointed Stephen Bridenstine as the next Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) Director on Jan. 14. Bridenstine will lead the museum and science center to educate its guests about the history, heritage and ecology of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie. He also will oversee the day-to-day operations including its exhibits and program offerings and the museum and education professionals. "While serving as Interim Director, Bridenstine demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to the Center's mission,” Aaron Stewart, Manhattan Parks and Recreation director said. "His proven track record and ability to lead during a period of transition make him the ideal choice for the permanent Director position. His appointment will maintain the momentum that has been built under his guidance, positioning the FHDC for continued success in the years ahead." Topekans can soon ice skate in at Stormont Vail Events Center Bridenstine has been with the FHDC since 2014, where he became the first full-time Curator of Education, creating programs like Meet the Makers, Breakfast with Santa and Family New Year's Eve, according to the city. In September 2021, he was promoted to the Assistant Director and Development Officer. In that role, Bridenstine secured funding for the $40,000 NASA Community Anchor Program and $200,000 Kansas Tourism Task Grant for the Stepping into the Prairie Exhibit. “I am truly honored and privileged to be named the next Director of the Flint Hills Discovery Center,” Bridenstine said. “I am eager to continue the great success of the Discovery Center by focusing on people – the professional team that keeps the FHDC running, the volunteers and members who gift us with their time and talent, and the everyday guests who make the Discovery Center their destination of choice. I look forward to working with all these partners and more to continue to make the Flint Hills Discovery Center the region’s top choice for education and family fun.” Bridenstine has been the Interim Director since May 2024 after the previous Director, Susan Adams, retired, according to the city.
