CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Below-freezing high temperatures could keep rivers and ponds frozen in Massachusetts. Many factors determine whether water will freeze and temperatures are only the beginning. Water temperatures don't fluctuate as quickly as air, so it normally takes extended cold spells to freeze still bodies of water. The size of a pond or lake will also heavily determine how long it takes for ice to form on the surface. 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis explains why even moving bodies of water are able to freeze, "Over time, it can especially when you start to have ice buildup such as we have the Connecticut River right now. so as it starts to build up, the water moves, slower and slower. that allows ice to form on rivers faster as well." Keep in mind that most moving bodies of water won't completely freeze over due to warm and cold temperatures mixing as water flows. Even still bodies of water may not freeze due to many factors from salt content to the local ecosystem. With freezing temperatures consistent through Thursday, it's possible that you'll still see ice chunks on the Connecticut River.
