BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) - House and Senate Republicans came together to call for urgent reform of Massachusetts' shelter system in a Tuesday morning press conference. The Republican push for reform has been ongoing since the influx of migrants began, but is renewed by a recent arrest at a shelter and Governor Healey's announcement that she is open to altering the right-to-shelter law. Healey rolling out $8-billion transportation plan Western Massachusetts Senator Ryan Fattman was part of a committee that analyzed the shelter system over the last year, and is among the strongest advocates for reform. "The message that we have portrayed throughout the country and the world is if you come to Massachusetts, we will take care of you. And now we've realized that that is not feasible," Fattman said. The Republican Caucus listed legislative and procedural solutions including instituting state residency requirements with some exceptions, limiting all stays to six months, authorizing ICE detainment for violent offenders, and an audit of the shelter system to ensure cost-effectiveness. Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr said that all Massachusetts residents are at risk until better screening of shelter residents is implemented. "We have a moral and legal obligation to take action to address those concerns--the sustainability of the system or lack thereof, and the public safety of the system," Tarr said. The Republican Caucus says they are planning to file an omnibus shelter reform bill by Friday's deadline for the first round of legislation of the session.
