Over the weekend in St. Anton, Austria, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn continued to prove that age is truly just a number. The 40-year-old Parkite finished in fourth and sixth in the St. Anton World Cup super-g and downhill races, respectively, her best results in her retirement comeback. The Cup was only Vonn’s third event back. Lindsey Vonn races the St. Moritz World Cup super-g race last month, her first cup in nearly six years. She’s shattering even the highest of expectations. It seems all-but-guaranteed that Vonn will find her way onto another podium this season. There are five cups and a world championship left on the speed tour slate. Vonn has accumulated 137 podium finishes and 82 wins in her illustrious career. The next cup will come this weekend in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the site for the 2026 Olympics. Vonn has 20 podium finishes and 12 wins at the site, with her first podium having come in 2004. When she began her comeback, Vonn cited NBA legend LeBron James as a source of inspiration as someone who continues to succeed in the latter stages of their career. James won his latest NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 at 35 years old. If Vonn were to find herself atop a series of cup podiums, a world championship or Olympic podium, it’s safe to say she’d likely enter herself into the same rarified air as James. Other athletes who have also fought off Father Time to find success at later ages are Tiger Woods, whom Vonn previously dated for a few years, and Tom Brady. Woods won his latest Masters green jacket at age 43 in 2019, and Brady, his final Lombardi Trophy at 43 in 2021. Vonn will be chasing a rarified, elite sporting club of sorts. Vonn said she didn’t have any specific goals for her return, that she just wants to enjoy her time on the slopes. I find it hard to believe she didn’t have supreme confidence that she’d get back to contention on the world stage, just needing her surgically replaced knee to hold up. Speaking after Sunday’s St. Anton super-g, Vonn said, “I’m in a good place. … really wanted to keep building every day on my results.“I have a lot of confidence in Cortina, so I hope I can put everything together there.”Vonn is indeed having a blast like she’d hoped in her comeback, surrounded by young, motivated U.S. teammates, many of whom grew up idolizing her. One of those skiers, fellow Parkite Lauren Macuga, won Sunday’s super-g for her first cup title. Vonn, Macuga and the rest of the U.S. team will hit the snow again in Cortina d’Ampezzo Saturday for the downhill race and Sunday for the super-g. Results from the races can be tracked on the Cup’s FIS page. The races can also be streamed on Ski and Snowboard Live. If you plan on continuing to doubt Vonn moving forward in her comeback journey, I’ll refer to a quote from U.S. tennis legend Andy Roddick — “Bet against the greats at your peril.”The post Lindsey Vonn proving that age is truly just a number appeared first on Park Record.
