WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The fate of the man accused of killing an 81-year-old Woonsocket woman nearly nine years ago is now in the hands of a jury. Matthew Dusseault, 27, was taken into custody two years after Constance Gauthier's body was discovered inside her Woonsocket home. He's pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and faces life in prison without parole. RELATED: Police take stand in Woonsocket murder trial Gauthier's body was first spotted by a neighbor who peered through one of her windows back in March 2016. Investigators believe Gauthier was stabbed more than 60 times, and that her home was staged to look like it had been ransacked. Detectives found Dusseault’s DNA mixed with Gauthier's blood on her bedroom furniture, and called into question a suspicious "grim reaper" tattoo on his arm. The neighbor who discovered Gauthier's body was also charged in connection with her murder. Those charges were later dismissed due to lack of evidence. MORE: Trial begins for suspect in 2016 Woonsocket murder Mark Smith, Dusseault's defense attorney, stressed in his closing arguments that there are more questions than answers surrounding Gauthier's murder. He encouraged the jury to not only consider the evidence that was presented, but also to not forget what's missing. Smith also urged the jurors "not to force the puzzle pieces to fit together" for the sake of a conviction. Assistant Attorney General Scott Erickson retorted that DNA evidence places Dusseault in Gauthier's bedroom when she was killed, and there's no innocent explanation as to why. "DNA doesn't have any bias and it doesn't have any prejudice," Erickson said. The jury has not yet reached a verdict and is expected to continue deliberating Wednesday morning.
