Medical examiner testifies in Carbuncle Pond murder trial

COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — Testimony resumed Tuesday morning in the joint murder trial of two men accused of killing a pregnant woman in 2022.
Gary Gromkiewicz, 37, and Michael Lambert, 47, are charged in connection with the death of 34-year-old Leila Duarte Da Luz.
Da Luz's body was discovered in an icy Coventry pond, and she was reportedly 8 to 10 weeks pregnant with Gromkiewicz's child at the time.
Prosecutors allege the two men picked Da Luz up from her Brockton home and left her in Carbuncle Pond with severe injuries. Defense attorneys argue there were no eyewitnesses to the alleged crime and a murder weapon was not recovered.

Dr. Alexander Chirkov from the Rhode Island Medical Examiner's Office, who conducted the Dec. 26, 2022, autopsy, testified about Da Luz's injuries on Tuesday.
Chirkov, who was called to the scene at Carbuncle Pond, said the victim was partially clothed and had extensive lacerations and bruises on her head.

Investigators determined her cause of death to be a combination of blunt force injuries and drowning, ruling it a homicide.
Chirkov refuted the possibility of an accidental fall causing the injuries, citing consistent blunt-force trauma. He also noted the presence of water in Da Luz’s sinuses, lungs, and stomach, indicating she was alive when submerged. Additionally, a ring was found on her left hand.
Rhode Island State Police Detective Corporal Robert Hopkins also took the stand for several hours to explain how cell phone data was used in the investigation.
Additionally, the juries were shown surveillance footage of the suspects from the days leading up to the alleged killing.

The dual trial, which began a week ago, has a separate jury for each defendant due to the similarities in their cases.
Last Tuesday, another RISP detective testified that a cell phone seized from Gromkiewicz revealed he made several Google searches "relevant to the investigation," prior to when Da Luz's body was found.
Some of the searches included, "Can police trace where I've been if my phone is turned off? and "Can my phone be tracked with location services turned off?"
Jurors also heard from April Bateman, a friend of Gromkiewicz, who testified that he contacted her after his arrest.
"He asked for me to be a witness for him on Dec. 21, 2022," Bateman recalled. "He offered me money and to get me out of the situation I was in."
Bateman claimed she did not meet Gromkiewicz until February 2023. Although she was initially tempted by his offer, she ultimately declined, saying she did not want to incriminate herself.
