Your News Leader is the first to sit with the Memphis Police just days after the joint Domestic Violence Repeat Offender Initiative was announced and a repeat offender with more than 50 prior arrests was captured. MPD said the goal is not only to get the offenders behind bars but to protect children and families. "If you are committing domestic violence act in Memphis, be warned," said Forrest Edwards of the MPD Investigative Counsel. A message as Memphis Police targets the city's most dangerous domestic violence offenders. Edwards is behind a new initiative that is already seeing success, like Tuesday morning's arrest of 40-year-old Cedric McGhee. Cedric McGhee. (MPD) "I believe he has 58 prior arrests," Edwards said. "Four prior felony convictions and a multitude of other misdemeanor convictions." McGhee is now being booked into 201 Poplar. Man accused of stabbing mother in face, neck appears in court Edwards said arrests like this keep victims and survivors safe. "You hear a lot about auto thefts and shootings," Edwards said. "The crime that really hits closest to home is domestic violence. It has been a crime that is plaguing our community." The initiative was announced last week as law enforcement from across the state, county and the Family Safety Center will team up to instantly notify multiple agencies to coordinate their response and approach. "We're referring many of these domestic violence offenders to the United States Attorney's Office for federal prosecution," Edwards said. "And so we're working to think outside the box and get creative with the ways that we prosecute."
