LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday night off Hooppole Creek Road, approximately 12 miles east of London. According to a Facebook post from Sheriff John Root, deputies were sent to a residence just after 9:00 p.m. following a report of a male subject being shot. Sheriff’s investigators determined that two individuals had allegedly been assaulted by a man at the residence. During the incident, the man reportedly reached for a gun and was then shot by another male in what appears to be an act of self-defense, according to the sheriff’s office. The injured man sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body and was airlifted to UK Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of serious injuries. A pistol was recovered at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. Findings of the investigation are being turned over to a Laurel County grand jury.
