Jan 14, 2025
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Governor Andy Beshear, alongside state officials and advocates, announced a new competition aimed at encouraging Kentucky teenagers to prioritize safe driving habits.
The “Kentucky’s Safest Teen Driver” contest, launched Tuesday at Franklin County High School, invites teens to register at KYHighwaySafety.com. The winner will be awarded $2,000 and earn the title of “Kentucky’s Safest Teen Driver.”
“We don’t want to see anyone hurt or gone too soon to a preventable crash, so that’s why we’re here today, to support you,” said Governor Beshear. “We figure the best way to support you is through a contest, and a contest that can actually kick out cash just for driving safely.”
Joining Beshear were Kentucky State Police officers, Secretary of Transportation Jim Gray, and a guest speaker who shared her personal experience of losing a loved one to distracted driving.
Officials say the initiative stems from alarming statistics, with over 200 teenagers losing their lives in car crashes in the past year. The competition aims to make Kentucky roads safer by encouraging teens to buckle up, avoid distractions like texting, and focus on the road.
