‘Stay off the bypass!’ Snow causes 12vehicle pileup in northern Indiana

Vehicles crash on U.S. 20 eastbound near South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — In a Facebook post, St. Joseph County Sheriff William Redman asked motorists to stay off the closed U.S. 20 bypass after a massive pileup on the snow-covered highway in northern Indiana.
After the highway reopened shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, St. Joseph County Police Department said the massive pileup including 12 vehicles, including three commercial vehicles. Two minor injuries were reported.
The department said, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, its personnel handled more than 33 crashes amid a snowstorm that passed through the area.
As of 2:30 p.m., U.S. 20 eastbound was closed at the 74.5-mile marker just outside South Bend, the Indiana Department of Transportation said.
St. Joseph County includes the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka.
Photos on Facebook from the St. Joseph County Police Department showed several semi-trailers and cars off the road. Sheriff William Redman wrote on the post, “I am out here and visibility is horrible! Stay off the bypass!”
The police department post went on to say “It is an all hands-on deck situation as our team continues to respond to the bypass. Visibility remains bad, roads are slick. Only minor injuries are being reported at this time. One of our officers had to drive off the road to avoid being hit by a semi. Thankfully, they are okay. Bypass remains closed from SR 2 eastbound up to Mayflower Road.”
