MANITOWOC COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - A hunter-harvested one-year-old buck in Manitowoc County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), leading to a new state-authorized baiting and feeding ban starting February 1, 2025. This detection will impact the following counties: VIDEO: Deputy rescues woman from burning vehicle after major crash in Wisconsin Manitowoc County: A three-year state-authorized baiting and feeding ban will take effect, in addition to the county's existing local feeding ban. Calumet County: A two-year baiting and feeding ban will be renewed. Sheboygan County: No changes, as the county already has a three-year baiting and feeding ban in place due to previous CWD detections. A public meeting hosted by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Manitowoc County Deer Advisory Council is scheduled for February 4, 2025, at 6 p.m. DNR staff will share information on CWD and local testing efforts. CWD is a fatal prion disease affecting deer, moose, elk, and reindeer/caribou. The DNR began monitoring for CWD in Wisconsin in 1999, with the first positive cases identified in 2002. State law mandates a baiting and feeding ban for counties with CWD detections and neighboring counties within 10 miles.
