(WPDE) — The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is reminding parents of ways to protect their child’s information following last week’s data breach involving PowerSchool. The SCDCA said that all state districts except for four were involved in the breach. The department said that parents should check to see if their child has a credit report, which could be a sign of identity theft. Parents can contact Experian, TransUnion or Equifax for more information. They also said parents should consider a protected consumer freeze. This allows parents to create a credit file for their child and freeze it, preventing creditors from getting their child’s credit report, and requests can be made on Experian, TransUnion or Equifax. Lastly, the department said to be on guard and that you will never receive a phone call, email text or social media message from a government agency demanding money or personal information. If you believe someone is using your child’s information, call SCDCA’s Identity Theft Unit at 1-800-922-1594 and submit an Identity Theft Intake Form.
