CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A “state-of-the-art planetarium theater” is set to open this month in Charleston. The Charleston Planetarium will open in mid-January at the Citadel Mall thanks to the efforts of the Charleston Planetarium Society. According to the mall directory, the planetarium will be across from the Planet Fitness and Alan's Nails. With the opening of the theater, visitors can immerse themselves in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) experiences surrounded by a domed screen depicting the night sky and universe beyond. The interactive experience will allow guests to accurately view the stars in the sky, as well as the planets, comets, asteroids, and more. Sponsors say the planetarium will be an inclusive environment, with accessibility for disabled visitors available. If needed, seating will include space for wheelchair users and their companions. The nonprofit society was created by local Entrepreneur Paul Gangarosa, College of Charleston Physics and Astronomy Professor Chris Fragile, and Planetary Geologist R. Scott Harris.
