Instead of hugging the Gulf side of 30A (as do WaterColor Inn, WaterSound Inn, and the Pearl Hotel), the luxury boutique property is anchored to a 18-hole golf course a mile from the coast. Camp Creek Inn’s biggest selling point isn’t sugar-white beaches, but rather non-beach amenities—its namesake golf course, a two-story wellness center, pickleball courts, even a half-basketball court. Which works out really well when you’re there in too-cold-to-sunbathe weather. I had been wanting to check out the inn for a while, and a holiday trip to the Panhandle afforded my husband and I the chance to spend a few days at the property. The temps were in the 50s, and I hoped there would be enough for us to do. I needn’t have worried. Camp Creek InnPhoto courtesy of Camp Creek Inn After pulling into the entrance off South Watersound Parkway (the road that dead-ends into County Road 30A, right by Alys Beach), we followed a winding lane beside the Tom Fazio–designed Camp Creek Golf Course. Groups of bicyclists pedaled by. We slowed as we passed the activity area, complete with a playground, eight tennis courts, eight pickleball courts, a heated pool with a waterslide and a lazy river, an adults-only lap pool, and a barbecue restaurant. The 11,000-square-foot wellness center—with group fitness classes, steam rooms, and saunas—loomed ahead. Across the promenade from the wellness center, we finally reached the inn. Rising three stories, with Louisiana-inspired architecture, the 75-room property looked like a Southern mansion ready to welcome us with open arms. We pulled up to the wide front porch and noticed that the driving range for the golf course was adjacent to the property. Everyone walking in and out of the front double doors was in some sort of active attire, be it for golf, tennis, or a workout. Camp Creek InnPhoto courtesy of Camp Creek Inn After checking in, my husband headed to the golf course to play 18 holes. Me? I helped myself to a bag of chips from the “Treat Suite” on our floor, then flopped onto our comfortable bed and took a nap. This is what I like to do on vacation; I make no apologies. During the rest of my stay, I did take advantage of the amenities—many of them perfect for days of chilly sunshine. I took a tennis lesson from Alexa Guarachi Bruner, a former pro doubles player who was once 11th in the world. I hit the gym. I laid by the pool in my sweats and read a book. We could have caught a hotel shuttle to WaterSound Beach Club, where Camp Creek Inn guests have access to the club’s pools, restaurants, and private beach. But we didn’t. There was plenty to do right there, and we were having a lovely time doing it. I’m sure during the warmer months, the ability to stay away from the beachfront madness, while still having easy access to it, is a great perk. But when it’s cold outside, Camp Creek Inn is a self-contained hub of activity. One that I’d be happy to return to any time of year.
